Walk The Plank – Loathe 12″ EP (Mt. Crushmore Records)

Walk The Plank has recently released an outstanding Loathe EP, featuring five exceptional tracks. Originating from the vibrant Washington D.C. hardcore scene, Walk The Plank combines the raw modern hardcore punk sound with a respectful nod to the city’s melodic hardcore roots. Released under Mt. Crushmore Records in 2024, “Loathe” exemplifies their dedication to the craft and unapologetic commentary on contemporary societal issues.

The EP kicks off with a bang, immediately drawing listeners in with a sonic assault that marries aggressive vocals and instrumentations. Lead vocalist Lan Crocker commands attention with his passionate shouts, delivering socio-political lyricism that tackles a range of subjects, from the societal focus on online relevancy in “Anti-Social Media” to the poignant exploration of animal cruelty in “Dugout” and the sobering reflection on gun violence in “Good Guy With A Gun?” Of course, that doesn’t mean the remainder of this EP is less significant, as each composition delivers wisely constructed criticism. Musically, Walk The Plank demonstrates a keen understanding of their genre’s roots while also infusing a delicate touch of modern melodic punk rock into the mix. The interplay between lead and rhythm guitars is a standout feature, with cleverly constructed riffs and chord progressions providing a sturdy foundation for the thematic content. The duality between the guitars propels each composition to new heights, ensuring that the melodic and hardcore elements flawlessly coexist.

In the meantime, the intricately woven and distinctly audible basslines contribute depth and heaviness to the overall sound. Simultaneously, the percussive elements, characterized by energetic beats, well-accentuated breaks, and fills, dictate the groove and pace, maintaining a tight cohesion throughout the EP. Each band member plays a significant role in this sonic equation, which unquestionably contributes to the brilliance of the material.Recorded at IVAKOTA studio with producer Ben Green of Fairweather, “Loathe” boasts a clean yet gritty production. The EP’s sonic intensity is captured with precision, allowing the intricacies of the instrumentals to shine without compromising the raw edge essential to hardcore punk. Of course, “Loathe” also shines in terms of visual presentation. The 12″ red vinyl, housed in a robust record sleeve adorned with eye-catching cover artwork, underscores the band’s commitment to delivering a complete package for their audience.

While “Loathe” may not represent a radical departure from Walk The Plank’s established sound, it signifies a refinement and maturity within their sonic identity. It’s a release that resonates not only for its musical prowess but also for its unflinching examination of societal issues. In the ever-evolving landscape of hardcore punk, “Loathe” cements their position as stalwarts pushing the boundaries of the genre while staying true to the roots.
