Deeper will release new album Careful! on 8th September 2023, their first with Sub Pop Records. It was recorded at Palisade Studios in Chicago with help from producer/engineer Dave Vettraino (Makaya McCraven, Lala Lala), and this thirteen-track collection of new songs finds the band reshaping facades, splashing color, and sonically testing their limits.
Following the previously released tracks ‘Sub’, ‘Build a Bridge’, and ‘Tele’ comes new single ‘Fame’.
Deeper say about the single and video: “‘Fame’ is a sentimental favorite of ours – to us, it’s the sound of ‘Careful!’. It embodies the conversations in your mind after feeling you made a mistake, and the thoughts linger in your head afterward. The lyricism is built on repeated mantras, and the instrumentation builds the tension. This is the first song from the record that embodies a more experimental side we’re excited to showcase.
The concept for the video focuses on us being hunted by a mythical creature called a Wendigo. The Anishinaabe have a story of a giant cannibal called Wendigo that feeds solely on human flesh, blood, and bones, that grows every time it eats, but its hunger is never quenched. One becomes a Wendigo when they start leading an unbalanced life when they think only of themselves rather than their community. At its root, Wendigos represent selfishness and gluttony, which to the Anishinaabeg are the worst human shortcomings.”
The band recently performed at this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival on 22nd July in Chicago, which the Chicago Sun Times described as a “ …unforgettable triumph…joyous, jagged, infectious and definitely musically memorable.” Deeper has expanded its headline world tour to include a hometown show on 26th October at Thalia Hall in Chicago. North American dates are from 21st September to 26th October, and European and UK shows are from 31st October – 14th November.
