Sister. Shares A New Single

Brooklyn’s much-tipped Sister. return today with the indie-folk of “Girl”, the second release to come from their new EP, “Something / Nothing”, due September 10th. Lulling vocal harmonies from Hannah and Ceci pair to plaintive acoustic guitars, skittish percussion and distant drones, with a winding lyric that lands upon a final, definitive mantra of “I am different now”.

It follows the release of “Hideaway” in June, an emotive torch-song that saw the band pick up significant support internationally from the likes of DIY, Rough Trade, Secret Meeting, Beats Per Minute and more.

The band’s Ceci Sturman has the following to say about the themes behind their new song:

“Girl is about a period of destabilizing growth – the growth that you’re so conscious of as it’s happening to you that it’s scary. You’re asking people that know you and love you – do you still love me even though I’m not who you thought I was? You’re asking yourself.

Already creating buzz in their adopted hometown of NYC off the strength of material released over the last year, and recent full-band shows following the release of “Hideaway”, Sister. originally began as a songwriting project for Hannah Pruzinsky and Ceci Sturman.

Hannah and Ceci had met as college roommates at St. John’s University in Queens but they didn’t start playing music together at first, that was to come later. The friendship was always creative – they bonded over exchanging poetry prompts while listening to M83 and Beach House their freshman year. The bond has only deepened over time and they’re still living together 7 years later.

Sister. happened by accident – during their senior year of college, Ceci wrote a song for a course assignment, and asked Hannah to sing it. The first time they performed the song in a church basement, they were then invited to perform it at a wedding happening later that month. They decided on the name after being asked over and over if they were sisters, the question posed due to their obvious closeness, rather than any significant physical similarities. Sister. is what happens when a band forms out of intimacy, when the music is born out of this emotional proximity.

Immediately before the New York lockdown, the group expanded to include friend and guitarist James Chrisman. The new band’s collaborative songwriting catapulted Sister. in a whole new direction, Chrisman adeptly complementing the duo’s acoustic songs with weird, sound-bending arrangements.

Pruzinsky, Sturman and Chrisman co-wrote “Soft Spot” – Sister.’s debut DIY EP, written and self-recorded entirely in quarantine in Brooklyn, NY. The EP was shaped over many FaceTime calls and files sent back and forth from two apartments across the borough, drawing inspiration from Lomelda, Adrianne Lenker, Alex G and others. “Soft Spot” continued true to Sister.’s origin – intimate and unpredictable.

In early 2021, Sister. tracked four songs at Greenpoint Recording Collective studio, illustrating their most dynamic stories to date. Their forthcoming second EP “Something / Nothing” was recorded alongside multi-instrumentalist and engineer Dylan McKinstry. S / N welcomes listeners into a new intimacy with the band – unrequited-self-sabotaging love, the ever evolving, ever confusing relationship to oneself, a fractured ankle, growing older.
