Rovar17 & The Three​-​Brained Robot – Split CS (Alien Seduction)

Here’s another experimental release worth mentioning that would be such a treat for those who’re not looking out for any particular subgenre of avant-garde music. Both outlets are exploring various experimental genres, so this material appears as diverse and unique as possible. Rovar17 is not a stranger to these pages, and I had a chance to experience his live performances and review dozen of his works in the past. On the other hand, I am not familiar with The Three-Brained Robot, but I assume this outlet explores a humorous/entertaining side of experimental music, considering the name of the project. Today, I will talk a bit further about their split cassette, released in October of 2020 by Alien Seduction.

A side carries five compositions by The Three-Brained Robot, a unique project based in New Orleans, Louisiana. His performance includes weird acapella, dialogue, and monologue performances. However, The Three-Brained Robot leans towards glitchy electronica, retro-electronica, minimal synth, weird pop sound as the material proceeds. You may also notice some tape manipulations, musique concrete movements, and other similar experimentations, but this artist solely focuses on minimal electro-pop acrobatics. Some compositions explore a couple of relentless genres like hardcore and noise, where The Three-Brained Robot gives special treatment to both genres through chaotic experimentations.

Rovar17 holds to previously established aesthetics that shaped his sound over the years. This well-established Hungarian experimental noise artist gradually builds his compositions from grimy industrial ambiances to more obscure harsh noise acrobatics. Nevertheless, he also implements bits and pieces of other avant-garde elements during this process, such as experimental noise, drone, electronica. These numbers are bursting with more of a regular experimental noise than harsh noise aesthetics, but that gives a lot more room for various movements, acrobatics, and articulations. Like his previous work, Rovar17 thoroughly planned each segment of his tracks, so you’ll solely enjoy his performance if you’re a fan of perfectly executed experimental noise.

This split release comes on a red cassette, accompanied by hand-drawn/pixelized cover artwork that appropriately follows the aesthetics of this material. While both artists have plenty of things to offer during their performances, I have to acknowledge I enjoyed a lot more in Rovar17 side of this split release. However, that doesn’t mean The Three-Brained Robot compositions are bad. Quite the contrary, I found his unique performance entertaining, but the genres he’s covering with his project are not entirely my cup of tea.
