Son Of The Mourning – Eulogy CD EP (Engineer Records)

Son Of The Mourning is a progressive metalcore quintet emanating from Salford, Manchester, UK. The group has its ups and downs since the formation in 2001, went through a couple of line up changes, and eventually broke up in 2008. However, Son Of The Morning conceptualized their musical direction and awaited the appropriate timing to showcase their recordings to the broader auditorium. It was an extended process that demands loads of spare time, commitments, so the band decided to put everything on hold around 2008. Sometime around 2017, the group decided to reactivate, and they’ve recorded seven compositions that were written back in 2008. Son Of The Mourning appears like they never called it quits and earned experience through time passing goes to their advantage.

Eulogy represents a comprehensive collection of progressive metalcore numbers, previously composed and stored for over a decade. However, the group sounds better than ever. Each member added formerly gained knowledge to improve these tunes so they can resonate even better. Son Of The Mourning drains its creative force from the very influential acts such as Darkest Hours, Misery Index, Killswitch Engage, Lamb Of God, Pantera, and Devin Townsend. Nevertheless, at the moments, you may hear the strong resemblance with Converge, Poison The Well, Blueprint To A Downfall, Amends To The Dead, and Architects. Son Of The Mourning incorporated a vast portion of various musical directions that are going together in harmony but also leaves enough space to include some personal touches.

Guitars are firing mathcore oriented metalcore guitar shreds. Both guitars are bursting with various progressive harmonizations, thoughtfully structured melodic thematics, tapping technicalities, dissonant licks, and classic metalcore palm-muted riffages. Guitar works are utterly impressive, and they will keep you entertained throughout the complete recording. The bass guitar adds up another layer of compelling tones through technically demanding basslines. These low-end tones are fulfilling the ambiance with crushing scales, which are heavy enough to break the bones in your body. All these orchestrations are accompanied by an impressive drumming performance that includes a comprehensive collection of cleverly arranged rhythmical acrobatics. Vocals are following all these maneuvers with ferocious screams, growls, and shoutouts. These chants are providing another layer of maniacal dynamics to the group, but also liberate enough power individually to squeeze your listening apparatus.

Perhaps Son Of The Mourning has abandoned this material for a while, but it was worth all the wait. Even if you’re not profoundly into enormously technical metalcore music, you may find this recording interesting mainly because of the sheer dynamics and gracious dosage of marvelous melodies. Eulogy EP comes on a compact disc, housed in a quality cardboard sleeve. It’s available through Engineer Records, so head over to their web store and treat yourself find this remarkable metalcore release.
